Morocco’s Atlas Lions set global record with 16th consecutive win

TCNews|| Rabat – Morocco’s national football team has etched its name into the history books, securing a world record 16th consecutive victory by defeating Congo 1–0 in the final round of African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Already qualified for the tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer, the Atlas Lions continued their flawless campaign under head coach Walid Regragui.

The decisive goal came in the 63rd minute, when striker Youssef En-Nesyri converted a cross from Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi.

The win surpasses the previous global record of 15 consecutive victories held by Spain between June 2008 and June 2009. France had set the earlier benchmark with 14 wins from March 2003 to February 2004.

“Teamwork writes history. Sixteen victories and the journey continues,” the Moroccan national team posted on its official X account, accompanied by a video montage of their winning streak, which began on June 7, 2024, with a 2–1 win over Zambia.

The achievement adds another milestone to Morocco’s recent football renaissance, following their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the first African nation to reach that stage.
